We're always suckers for a good romantic comedy, but with Valentine's Day fast approaching, we're even more in the mood to watch these sweet movies.
Our all-time favorite is the classic, When Harry Met Sally:

And coming in a very close second is You've Got Mail (you go, Meg Ryan!):

Red Velvet Cheesecake Brownies

We just found this recipe for Red Velvet Cheesecake Brownies via Sweet Pea's Kitchen and we're dying over it! Doesn't it look too good to be true? It would be such a perfect treat to make for Valentine's Day. Too bad my boyfriend hates cheese (in any form)! Oh well-- more for me, right?

What you'll need:

1/2 cup butter
2-oz dark chocolate, coarsely chopped
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 tsp red food coloring
2/3 cup all purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt
8-oz cream cheese, room temperature
1/3 cup sugar
1 large egg
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350F. Butter the bottom and sides of a 8 inch metal baking pan. Put a long piece of parchment paper in the bottom of the pan, letting the parchment extend up two sides of the pan and overhang slightly on both ends. Butter the parchment.
In a small, heatproof bowl, melt butter and chocolate together. Stir until combined and very smooth. Set aside to cool for a few minutes.
In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs, vanilla extract and red food coloring. Add chocolate mixture and stir until smooth. Add flour and salt and stir until just combined and no streaks of dry ingredients remain.
Pour into prepared pan and spread into an even layer.
To prepare cheesecake mixture, beat cream cheese, sugar, egg and vanilla extract in a medium bowl until smooth. Distribute the cheesecake mixture in 8 dollops over batter in the pan. Swirl in with a knife or spatula.
Bake for 35-40 minutes.
Let cool completely in pan on a cooling rack before lifting out the parchment paper to remove the brownies.

Christmas Snacks

Our family does Christmas Eve lunch at my aunt's house and this year Monica and I have been asked to bring the appetizers. We were a little stumped on what to make as everything we thought of was more of a side-dish than an appetizer, so what did we do? We consulted the great Martha Stewart, of course!

Mmm mm mm! Merry Christmas to us, right ladies?!
...Well... maybe not so much. But how can you not love these hilariously un-sexy photos by 26 year-old photographer Rion Sabean (fun fact: He's the model with the drill and the blue background!).
For the shoot, Sabean rounded up a few "Average Joes" and dressed them so they appeared to be the epitome of masculinity (lumberjack, athlete, etc.) then juxtaposed the look by posing them in classic Vargas-style pin-up poses. Funny how a surprised facial expression and legs in the air translate so differently on a man, isn't it?
Let's be honest, men have it pretty easy when it comes to looks and that's the way it should stay. Gentlemen, please-- No pouting, arching your back, or pointing your toes (unless you're trying to make us laugh). As unfair as it is, it's true: we girls like you best when you pretty much just stand there!

Meet the Models: Tessa & Tom

This November we did our first boy-girl photoshoot. The dapper gentleman that we chose to use as our male model is actually my and Monica's cousin! He's the best-dressed guy we know and he looked like the perfect fit for our female model Tessa.
Read on to meet the models of this romantical shoot:

Spotted Moth: What do you do?

Tom: I am an aspiring composer. I want to write operas and symphonies and ballets and concertos like my heroes Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, etc.
Tessa: I just graduated cosmetology school and right now I am working at planet beauty. But I plan to go back to school to be a dermatologist.

SM: Describe your personal style- how do you like to dress?

Tom: I like to dress like a gentleman. If I could have it my way, I'd wear a suit every day; in fact, everyone would be wearing suits. So I guess I like early 20th century fashion. I think Spotted Moth should bring back the top hat.
Tessa: My personal style is usually classic 50's pin-up-ish. I just think its cute and fun.

SM: What was your favorite part of the photoshoot?
Tom: My favorite part was being out in nature. Any time I spend amongst trees and birds is time well spent. Spending time with my cousin is a close second.
Tessa: The whole thing was really fun... I guess I liked just being in nature, 'cause I don't get a chance to do that very often.

SM: Was it awkward to act so lovey-dovey when the two of you had only just met that day?
Tom: I didn't feel awkward. I was a drama major and did waaaay weirder stuff in college.
Tessa: Haha nooo it wasn't awkward, Tom was really nice! And it was just for pretend.

SM: What do you love most about the holidays?
Tom: I love everything about the holidays. Even the stress. I get bored doing the same thing for too long and everything about the holidays is so full of energy and a general positivity seems to be shared by everyone. Plus the food and getting presents.
Tessa: Mmmmmmmm... the food!

Haunted Old Towne

We recently discovered a fun fact about the building that our shop is in: it used to be a movie theater! Opened in 1915, The Colonial Theatre was one of Orange County's first theaters. The front of our store was the marquee and the inside was the entryway into the auditorium (which is now our parking lot!). Isn't that neat?

Fortunately for us, the theater closed permanently in 1952 and (eventually) made way for our flagship store!

We love how historical the Circle is. But often times, with historical comes haunted. We've heard lots of creepy stories- from ghost sightings near the fountain to paranormal activity in the antique shops and restaurants (Rutabegorz is supposedly one of the most haunted restaurants here). In the spirit of Halloween, check out this fun website which shares real Old Towne residents' haunted experiences.
We have yet to see any movie-goer ghosts passing through Spotted Moth and we kind of hope it stays that way. No salty popcorn hands on our clothes please!

Fall Fun: Arts and Crafts

Lately we've been busy preparing our Fall window display for the shop. (We're allowed to put it up a little late since it still feels like summer in Southern California until October!) Working on displays is our favorite because it's like arts and crafts time! As the weather begins to cool down, what's cozier than settling in for an evening with your sewing kit, scissors, and paste (and maybe even some glitter)? It's so fun to see what you can make with your own hands and even more fun to put it on display for your friends to see. We can't give away what we're doing for our decorations just yet, but here are a couple neat ideas from Martha Stewart that we love:

Isn't Rodarte's Spring 2012 RTW collection amazing? When asked about the line, the Mulleavy sisters said that they were originally inspired by the vivid greens and purples in Sleeping Beauty, and wondered who else used similar colors. They came up with Vincent van Gogh and designed their prints based not only on the Dutch painter's color palette, but on his famous depictions of wheat fields, starry nights, and sunflowers as well.

Lately it seems like everyone is getting married. We've had countless lovely ladies come in to the shop to look for their bridal shower dress, their bachelorette party dress, or even their actual wedding dress! It's so exciting, we absolutely can't get enough of it. Such an honor for us to be a part of something so special!

Nifty Nails

No matter how busy I get, I always make time for my nails. Even if I have to paint them at midnight and then fall asleep rigor mortis style with my hands above the covers to prevent them from smudging. Looking at my hands and seeing a chipped mess just makes me feel like I'm twelve years old again (and I think we can all agree that being twelve once is quite enough!).

I usually just stick to the basic 2-coats-of-polish look, but what do you guys think of super fancy manicures like these? Do you get your nails done professionally? I used to but kicked the habit once I realized how silly it was to get frustrated when they inevitably chipped the very next day. "Another 25 dollars down the drain! That's it-- no more touching anything EVER!" Not so practical.

But having pretty colored nails can brighten your day, and maybe even someone else's if you get creative enough. It's like another accessory for us girls to have (because you know, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, and bags just aren't enough sometimes).

Do you have any fun manicure tricks? I think I might have to try the reverse french manicure today. I would love to hear your ideas!

He looks masculine and sexy but like he could still make you laugh. It's not often we ladies get the pleasure of seeing a gentleman in a suit (especially where we're from- the perpetually warm and uber-casual Orange County) so let's take a moment to appreciate:

August Shoot

Here are some pictures from the August photo shoot where I was the model! It took place at Laguna Beach around 7:30 in the morning. I had to get up extra early to turn my hair into that bird's nest that you see (probably the earliest I've woken up since high school-- brutal!). But the good thing about being there at that time was that it was practically empty... except for two dudes sitting on the sand that insisted on watching me pose. It was so awkward I could not stop laughing! It definitely reminded me why I could never be a "real" model (that and the fact that I'm about a foot too short). Oh well, we had a great time!

Candy-Bow-Tie Cupcakes

We love this adorable cupcake idea from Martha Stewart. The bow is made of fruit roll-up!

How to: Dip tops of cupcakes in royal icing, letting excess drip off, then let stand until set. Unroll fruit leather, and cut strips 1 1/4 inches wide and 6 inches long. Fold ends in toward the center, forming a 3-inch piece. Cut another strip 1/4 inch long and 1/2 inch wide. Wrap strip around center of folded piece, scrunching to form a bow. Press on top of cupcake, seam side down. Repeat.

Mary Blair

I recently went to Disneyland and saw the Mary Blair exhibit at the Disney Gallery. Mary Blair was the woman who did the concept art and color styling for the "It's a Small World" ride (also for the films Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and Cinderella). We've always been obsessed with the ride so getting to learn about the woman behind it and seeing some of her original drawings was a dream come true!

Isn't it magical? It's like the colors she used don't even exist anymore. Props to Walt for recognizing her talent and giving her such awesome opportunities to showcase it. Disneyland and Disney movies would not be the same without her!

One Skirt, Two Ways

One of our favorite new arrivals is the Bandit Skirt in Stripes by BB Dakota. It is a go-to item in my closet because of how versatile it is!

My first look is pretty casual with a simple T-shirt, funky necklace, and fringe wedges. I would wear this out shopping or on a lunch date with girlfriends.

The second look is a bit more dressed up. In retrospect, I probably should have chosen a different blouse because the ruffles in the front of this one aren't exactly discreet tucked into the skirt. It makes me look like I have somewhat of a food baby... a lumpy food baby. I also could have just untucked it, which still would have looked nice belted. But I didn't, so you just have to deal with the bunchiness, ladies and gentlemen.

Shop Progress

Here is a little peek at the latest updates to our retail space. We installed wooden beams to bring down the height of the ceiling and add a rustic feeling, two dressing rooms, and our office wall and door.

Beauty Tutorial: Face Mask

We went shopping at our local health food store over the weekend and found this face mask we had to try. It's called "Aztec Secret" and on the front of the container it claims to be the "World's Most Powerful Facial." We are sort of stick-to-what-we-know girls when it comes to beauty products but we liked that this mask is natural (100% Calcium Bentonite Clay) and it just sounded way too mystical to pass up!

What you'll need:
2. Spoon
3. Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay
4. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (We like Bragg Organic)
5. Your lovely face!

Mix equal parts clay and vinegar in the bowl and stir:

Soon you'll achieve that nice, gooey texture and you can smooth it over your face. The mask will begin to dry quickly so try to spread a thick layer evenly and all at once (I did it a little thin in some areas and when I tried to add more a minute later it got real chunky).

Viola! Note the awkward pursed lips-- it's not easy to smirk when your face is experiencing mild paralysis. A few minutes in, things started to get exciting. See, I didn't believe the back of the jar when it said "FEEL YOUR FACE PULSATE!" perhaps because I didn't want to-- call me crazy but I find the thought of my face pulsating rather alarming. But suddenly, it was. I felt a subtle twitch in my nose and something like hundreds of tiny rubber-bands gently snapping against my skin. It kept pulling tighter and tighter and after about 5 minutes the only function my face retained was the ability to blink. The directions recommend to leave the mask on for 5-10 minutes for delicate skin and 15-20 for normal skin. I rinsed it off after 10 to be safe, plus it was starting to feel so tight that I worried I was going to end up looking like this:

Alas, I did not. But my pores were completely cleansed and noticeably refined. My skin was a little rosy in some spots but didn't stay that way for long. Overall it was a fun experiment with a positive end result. I reckon it's not often that the Aztecs share their secrets, so I say you all get in on this one!

We've been working with our super-talented photographer Maile Roseland for six months now and we absolutely love her personality, her creative vision, and of course- the finished product of her work! So I wanted to give you a little glimpse at the girl behind the lens:

Christina: How long have you been interested in photography?
Maile: I've been doing photography since I got my first digital camera at 15 years old. I really started to get serious with it as a senior in high school though.

C: What inspires you?
M: I'm inspired by nature. I love the sea, especially. I love old things and little bits of history. I'm the weirdo who sits there wonders how old each grain of sand is.

C: What are your favorite things to take pictures of?
M: I love taking pictures of girls in natural settings. Always with natural light. I've always taken pictures in the evening, but I'm learning to love the morning light as well.

C: Any hobbies besides photography?
M: My hobbies include pressing leaves and flowers and gardening when I have the time. I also like to collect sea glass, shells and rocks.

C: How would you describe your personal style?
M: My personal style is really simple. I don't wear a lot of jewelry or accessorize very much. The majority of my closet is composed of dresses.

Meet the Blogger

Not sure if you guys know this but, there is actually only one woman behind Spotted Moth. From the beginning, Monica has run almost every facet of the business entirely on her own (she had professionals design the website, html is not her forte).

Only in the past few months has she hired on her first employee, our talented photographer Maile.
But now, with our first retail space opening in just a few short weeks, Monica has found herself so busy that she had no choice but to finally delegate a few tasks. Not so easy for a self proclaimed control freak!
As such, I, Monica's little sister will officially be taking over the blog!

That's me! ^ I'm so excited for this opportunity and would love for you guys to let me know what kinds of things you want to see on here so I can make the blog even more fun for you to read. I'm thrilled to join the Spotted Moth team!

Meet Lauren Frost

We're thrilled to feature the lovely and talented Lauren Frost as our model for the month of July! Lauren is a singer/songwriter from Chicago whose debut album "Words for the Birds" is now available-- she is giving Spotted Moth shoppers the opportunity to listen to and download a few of her songs for free!

This petite songbird has quite an interesting resume, as she's been involved in singing and acting for the majority of her life. Most memorable are her performances as Ruby on Disney's Even Stevens (do you miss that show as much as we do?!) and as the young Barbra Streisand- alongside Barbra herself- for the stage tour "Timeless."

Lauren's voice is uniquely beautiful and pure, and her lyrics are just as sweet. Her music sounds like drinking lemonade on the porch in the summertime (which is why she made the perfect July model!).
Make sure to stop by Spotted Moth this month to download "One & One," "The August," (our favorite!) and "Back in Arizona."

It was such a pleasure working with Lauren and her boyfriend/bandmate Ashton on this shoot. Ashton even helped us carry our heavier photoshoot props! We love helpful boyfriends!

SM: What do you do?
C: I work at a surf shop in Newport Beach, California. It is a blast and a great first job. I have worked there for about 2 years.
I have also just recently started learning how to play the piano. It's a challenge but it's all about practice, practice, and more practice!

SM: Describe your personal style - how do you like to dress?
C: My style is very eclectic! One day I will be wearing a baggy shirt with skinny jeans and Toms shoes, and another day I will be in a dress with a fedora and knee high leather boots.
A couple must haves in my closet are: jeggings, infinity scarf, flower headbands, loose t-shirts, and waist high shorts.
I like to have fun with my style.

On the left, Tani of What Would a Nerd Wear wears our dress with knee high socks and boots, along with a gray cardigan.
I am especially loving how she removed the dress's sash and wore it in a bow over the cardigan. It completely ties the whole look together.

What's In a Name? The Samo T Shirt

We named our Samo T Shirt after Jean-Michel Basquiat, a popular graffiti artist in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

Although the image on the shirt is not his art. The messy print style and the bold colors of the T are reminiscent of his work.

In his early years Jean-Michel and his friend Al Diaz tagged up lower Manhattan under the pseudonym "SAMO"
Leaving messages like: "Plush safe he think.. SAMO" and "SAMO as an escape clause."

Meet the Model: Sarah

Spotted Moth: What do you do?

Sarah: I am a chemist. I am studying at the University of California Davis to earn my PhD in a field called bioanalytical chemistry. My research project involves studying the composition of breast milk, specifically the sugars and proteins found in the milk, and seeing how it all relates back to the health of the infant. I hope to one day be a professor at a university and conduct research in a lab of my own. I would really like to be involved in getting students interested in the sciences.

Spotted Moth: Describe your personal style - how do you like to dress?

Sarah: I work in a lab, so my outfits have to be fashionable, but functional!I would say my personal style is simple, maybe along the lines of everyday-elegance. I like the classics! Although I sport a lot of jeans, I like to dress it up with a nice pair of boots and a smart blouse. I don't shy away from pretty, feminine dresses either! I like to keep it fun and very academic-chic!

Spotted Moth: What are you favorite items from Spotted Moth?

Sarah:

1- My favorite has to be the classic black Draw the Line Dress paired

with the Aspen Sweater. It has such a beautiful print and is so much fun to wear!

2- I love the Cocoa Blouse. I like the cowl neck and the structured

shoulders. Details in a blouse is a good way to dress up an outfit while still keeping it comfortable!

3- If I were going out to a nice holiday party I would definitely wear

the In the Navy Dress. So classy with detailed sleeves and a deep V back. Just lovely.

Spotted Moth: Now for a silly question...what is your favorite random fact?

Sarah: Our galaxy has approximately 250 billion stars and it is estimated by astronomers that there are 100 billion other galaxies in the

observable universe! That's more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on earth!

October Photoshoot / Part 1

Julian is a small historic gold mining and apple picking town.
It is the perfect place to get into the Fall spirit and eat a slice of homemade apple pie!

We did our shoot in Julian's old Pioneer Cemetery
where most of the gravestones are from the 1800s.
